The comet itself lasted only a few days, but many evils followed its ominous signs, especially upon our city of Florence.Soon after, a great mortality began, such that those who fell ill scarcely survived. More than a sixth of the citizens died, and many were the best and most beloved—both men and women. No family was spared, with two, three, or more members perishing.
